Bluewaters Island Overview

Bluewaters is a new man-made island located just off the coast of Dubai Marina. The development is set to become one of the top tourist destination in the Middle East.

Its central feature will be the Ain Dubai Ferris wheel (formerly known as the Dubai-I) which will be the largest in the world at 230 metres tall. Ain Dubai will be another iconic landmark for Dubai and will offer unobstructed views over the entire city.

There are ten residential buildings on Bluewaters Island as well as two 5-star luxury hotels providing 479 guest rooms and suites.

The apartment buildings contain 698 one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom, glass-fronted apartments, each with one or two parking spaces. There will also be four penthouses and 17 townhouses.

Amenities for residents include state-of-the-art gymnasiums, swimming pools, landscaped gardens, basketball courts and children’s play areas.

The four penthouses have 360-degree views of the Arabian Gulf, Marina, Ain Dubai and Dubai’s skyline and offer generous indoor and outdoor space, with 5-bedrooms, en-suite bathrooms and extended living areas.

The interiors at Bluewaters residences are finished to the highest standards, with a neutral palette and a minimalist style, and floor to ceiling windows in all apartments. The open plan kitchens feature top end Italian appliances and seamless worktops.

The first hotel to be build on the Island has 178 luxury rooms and 96 serviced apartments, ranging from one to four bedrooms. The second hotel has 301 rooms and 119 serviced apartments, also ranging from one to four bedrooms. Both hotels offer direct access to a 450-metre private beach.

At the base of the wheel there will be a 230,000 square metre Bluewaters Wharf retail development with 164 retail, dining and entertainment outlets. The ground and first floor levels will have 132 outlets with an additional 32 units under residential buildings, providing a combination of retail, restaurants, cafes and entertainments. Waterfront outlets will range from high-end restaurants to intimate bistros, while the basements beneath them will have ample parking for shoppers and visitors.

A new attraction on Bluewaters will be the world’s highest rope climbing platform perched at a height of over 150 metres on one of the legs of Ain Dubai.

The entire $1.6 billion project is being developed by Meraas, the government-owned company behind the new City Walk development in Jumeirah and The Beach retail and restaurant district in Jumeirah Beach Residence.

Construction Updates

The island was constructed between 2013 and 2014 using 3 million cubic metres of sand, 800,000 cubic metres of rock and more than 35,000 square metres geotextile material.

There are five major projects under way on the island: 1) Construction of the 210-metre high Ain Dubai Ferris wheel; 2) Infrastructure links to the mainland; 3) The mid-rise towers and town houses; 4) The boulevard area with retail and dining units; 5) The construction of two hotels.

By March 2017 construction work on the island was 75 per cent complete with the project moving on from its structural phase to building finishes. Work is set to complete by the end of the first quarter of 2018.

Five main contractors are involved in the works as well as over 40 of the world’s leading consultant firms. At its peak 16,500 employees and 25 cranes a day have worked on Bluewaters. 64 million man hours were recorded and 12,000 direct jobs sustained over the 12 months ending March 2017.

Road Access

To facilitate access to Bluewaters Island direct road links from Sheikh Zayed Road have been constructed by RTA.

The island provides 2,400 parking spaces and the drive to Dubai Marina is 7 minutes, to Downtown Dubai 20 minutes, to Al Maktoum Airport 30 minutes, to Dubai International Airport 30 minutes, and to Abu Dhabi Airport 45 minutes.

Public Transport

In March 2017 2getthere Middle East was awarded the contract to supply a Group Rapid Transit service, an automated system of driverless vehicles to Bluewaters Island from the nearby Ibn Battuta metro station. The system is capable of ferrying 2,500 passengers per hour in each direction, with the 25 vehicles each carrying up to 24 passengers per trip on the 2.5-kilometre journey.

For those on foot a 265-metre pedestrian bridge links the island to the beachfront at Jumeirah Beach Residence. Otherwise the island will be accessible by ferry.
