This project was originally dubbed the ‘iPad’, the design being inspired by Apple's iPod MP3 player with the tower sitting on a docking station angled at 6.5 degrees to give the exact look.
By 2007, when groundworks for the construction began, the building had been renamed ‘The Pad’. In 2009 construction was put on ‘hold’ until December 2012 and completion is expected to be during 2018.
The building employs a new type of architecture known as Cybertecture, which uses technology to its full advantage, allowing inhabitants to program their own software for their building.
The interiors have a range of technologies such as biometric locks, mood lighting, voice control and mirrors that can monitor your health.
The podium of The Pad tower includes an 'iClub' designed around the theme of digital water, real water and digital projections that create a stunning setting for this complex of communal facilities.
The exclusive residents’ club has a state-of-the-art gymnasium, running track, half basketball court, a swimming pool fitted with an underwater audio system and a Media Jacuzzi equipped with waterproof touch-screens.
The club also provides residents with their own unique meeting lounge, chill-out lounge, party room, games room, library and an outdoor sunset terrace.
In the design competition architects James Law Cybertecture International Limited beat both Foster and Partners and Zaha Hadi Architects with their scheme.
