Three fishing harbours in Dubai have been restored and regenerated to provide better facilities for fishermen and to encourage visitors.
The project began in 2008 and was completed in 2014.
The three harbours are Jumeirah 1, Umm Suqeim 1 and Umm Suqeim 2. Each consists of a fish handling area, accommodation and facilities for fishermen, and a tourist area with shops and restaurants.
The renovated boatyards now have a total of 466 anchorages, 348 for fishing boats and 119 for yachts and recreational boats. Improved facilities for fishermen include warehouses to store fishing equipment, boat repair workshops and two fish markets, one in Jumeirah 1 and the other in Umm Suqeim 1. There are also a number of shops, restaurants and cafes, majlis where fishermen gather to socialise, and prayer halls.
